Body Scrub 101: What It Does and How Often to Use One

What Does a Body Scrub Do?

A body scrub combines a physical exfoliant, in our case fine sugar, with nourishing oils to buff away dry, flaky skin while moisturizing at the same time. Exfoliating helps clear away the buildup of dead skin cells that can make skin look dull or feel rough, leaving smoother skin behind.

How Often Should You Exfoliate?

For most people, 2-3 times a week is a good starting point. Skin naturally sheds and renews itself, so exfoliating too often can leave skin irritated rather than smooth. If your skin feels tight or sensitive afterward, scale back to once a week.

What's Actually in a Sugar Scrub

Our scrubs start from a whipped tallow soap base rather than plain sugar and oil. Sucrose provides the physical exfoliation, while grass-fed tallow, olive oil, and coconut oil moisturize as you scrub. A touch of mild, coconut-derived cleansing agents help the scrub rinse clean and lather lightly, kaolin clay smooths, and vitamin E is added as an antioxidant. Each scent is finished with a gentle, non-toxic fragrance and natural mineral colorants.

How to Use a Sugar Scrub

  1. Apply to damp skin in the shower, focusing on rougher areas like elbows, knees, and feet.
  2. Massage in circular motions for 30-60 seconds.
  3. Rinse thoroughly. Skin will feel soft immediately, since the scrub moisturizes as it exfoliates.

Our Scrubs

Each of our sugar scrubs combines fine sugar with nourishing oils and grass-fed tallow for a creamy, non-greasy finish. Try Grapefruit + Bergamot for a bright, energizing option, Seaside Escape for something coastal and fresh, Santal Rouge for warm and sensual, or Vanilla + Almond for something warm and comforting. Frequently Asked Questions About Sugar Scrubs

What are the benefits of a body scrub?

A body scrub buffs away dry, flaky skin and clears the buildup of dead skin cells that can make skin look dull, while the tallow and oils in the formula moisturize at the same time. The result is smoother, softer skin right after rinsing.

How often should you exfoliate with a body scrub?

Two to three times a week works well for most people. Skin naturally sheds and renews itself, so exfoliating daily can leave it irritated rather than smooth. If your skin feels tight or sensitive afterward, scale back to once a week.

Can I use a sugar scrub on my face?

We'd recommend sticking to body use. Sugar crystals are coarser than what's typically recommended for the more delicate skin on your face, so a sugar scrub is best kept to the body, elbows, knees, and feet especially.

Can a sugar scrub be used every day?

We wouldn't recommend it. Daily exfoliation is generally too frequent for most skin and can lead to irritation. 2-3 times a week is a better starting point, scaling back if your skin feels tight or sensitive.

Is a sugar scrub good for sensitive or eczema-prone skin?

Sugar scrubs can be too abrasive for very reactive or eczema-prone skin, since physical exfoliation can irritate an already compromised skin barrier. If your skin is sensitive, patch test on a small area first and stick to once a week or less.

Will a sugar scrub help with ingrown hairs or bumps?

Regular exfoliation can help reduce the buildup that contributes to ingrown hairs, since it clears away dead skin that can trap hairs beneath the surface. It's not a guaranteed fix, but it's a helpful part of a routine, especially before shaving.

Does a body scrub lighten skin?

Not exactly. A sugar scrub doesn't change your skin's natural pigment, but by clearing away dead, dull skin cells it can leave skin looking brighter and more even right after use.

Do I need to moisturize after using a sugar scrub?

Our scrubs already moisturize as they exfoliate thanks to the tallow and oils in the formula, but if your skin runs very dry, following up with a body oil or lotion bar won't hurt.

How should I store a sugar scrub?

Keep the lid on tightly between uses and avoid letting water drip into the jar, since introducing extra water can affect the texture and shelf life over time.
